Bodhi Linux

Last Update: 2017-02-18 09:24 UTC

Bodhi Linux is an elegant and lightweight Ubuntu-based distribution featuring Moksha, an Enlightenment-17-based desktop environment. The project takes a decidedly minimalist approach by offering modularity, high levels of customisation, and choice of themes. In addition to basic 32- and 64-bit systems, Bodhi maintains designated ISO images for Chromebooks and legacy machines. By default Bodhi has only five pre-installed applications: Midori, Terminology, PCManFM, ePhoto, and ePad. Additional software is available via AppCenter, a web-based software installation tool.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Small and very fast, nice look and 3D Desktop (if you want with ecomorph and ecomp - but then a little bit slower)

the best Linux for my old PC.

I am very sorry to write this, because I like the idea behind this distro.

Good:
Bodhi is fast, it is true lightweight and the DE is interesting.

Bad:
I am not a beginner and I gave Bodhi a go three times in a row. And always something went wrong. Examples: the updater worked at first, but disappeared after a restart. Gdebi and synaptic were added, but did not start after a click, the workaround via terminal (sudo synaptic or sudo gdebi) worked, but then the updater collapsed. Again workaround via terminal. Kernel update did not help. By the way, Bodhi avoids regular kernel upgrades like Ubuntu does right now and this can be discussed controversially.

I think, the problem is simple but of serious consequence. A quite small team (Bodhi) is operating with Ubuntu LTS. Whenever something gets updated by Ubuntu, Bodhi has to check it immediately (dependencies, themes, gtk and so on) and very often something has to be fixed. That is very challenging. Whoever uses Bodhi has to deal with a lot of small things to be worked on. That is no fun.

Lubuntu in comparison is solid, as fast as Bodhi and I have never had a single issue, everything works out of the box. I think the reason is that Lubuntu is an official flavour of Ubuntu.

What is Linux right now? Not enough cooperation, too many small teams, too many desktop environments (who needs this?) and only a few distros can be considered as really
user-friendly.
