DistroWatch.com: GeckoLinux

GeckoLinux

Last Update: 2016-12-20 17:15 UTC

GeckoLinux is a Linux spin based on the openSUSE distribution, with a focus on polish and out-of-the-box usability on the desktop. The distribution features many desktop editions which can be installed from live discs. Some patent encumbered open source software is included in GeckoLinux which is not available in the default installation of openSUSE. Special attention has been given to the quality of the font rendering. GeckoLinux provides two main editions, Static (which is based on openSUSE Leap) and Rolling (based on openSUSE Tumbleweed).

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

This is the best of one Linux distribution.
Great automatic detection hardware and I have no issue about Gecko Linux.
I am impressive about this. So, my opinion about this distribution is for a review this:
1. Stable
2. Many flavor for Desktop Environment, I am using XFCE
3. Daily use
4. User Friendly, with many flavor of Desktop Environment, it easier for people want to try, leaning and adaptation for Linux
5. I have no problem about software packages or hardware

I am your typical distro hopper and been for the last 10 years.
Here's my take on Gecko.
I have using Gecko for two months now without any issues, rebooted once, didnt seem to make any difference, it still was fast.
It is simple to use and very quick.
Firefox starts and runs faster on Opensuse than other Linux distro's, not sure why but I am not complaining.
There are a lot of good Linux distro's available.
For now, I'm going to stick with Gecko.

Certain programs that I use are not in the 'standard' repository which means that I must install them (and their individual repositories) separately. This generally does not cause conflicts but it does cause some 'head-scratching' when choices must be made during updating. But, all in all, GeckoLinux is by far my favorite of the rolling release type of GNU/Linux operating system.
