Last Update: 2019-08-13 20:08 UTC

Founded in 2014 by Oliver Pinter and Shawn Webb, HardenedBSD is a security-enhanced fork of FreeBSD. The HardenedBSD Project is implementing many exploit mitigation and security technologies on top of FreeBSD. The project started with Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) as an initial focal point and is now implementing further exploit mitigation techniques.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Installed on a dell inspiron laptop, hoping against belief that it would not have the same flaws on this laptop as its namesake freebsd. Too much to ask of though.

I could go into the graphic issue inherited from freebsd - the intel driver does not have a lot of screen resolutions, and certainly not wide-screen 16:9 resolutions, which means you are stuck with its fantastically tight screen resolution something like 3200xwhatever. You have to increase the DPI to at least double if not three times to to be able to see with comfort fonts, icons etc...

Trouble with Mate desktop - nothing much would open, but better luck with XFCE.

Then of course, just like freebsd, some applications can not adapt to high resolution, and a high DPI, and are either too small or too large.

For myself, overall, too much of a struggle for my aging eyes to cope with.

Still gave it an eight though!

Looked like a great alternative to other FreeBSD variants which are not security focused. Installation is seamless, as well as package management. However, development clearly prioritises server, and not desktop appliances, judging by the lack of video drivers for example. Overall I was glad to try this OS, though in my case it wasn't suitable.

Overall HardenedBSD is a well refined BSD variant. Aside from the endless struggle to support every device ever created, HardenedBSD has been flawless in every aspect.
