DistroWatch.com: Korora Project

Korora Project

Last Update: 2017-09-21 07:27 UTC

Korora was born out of a desire to make Linux easier for new users, while still being useful for experts. The main goal of Korora is to provide a complete, easy-to-use system for general computing. Originally based on Gentoo Linux in 2005, Korora was re-born in 2010 as a Fedora Remix with tweaks and extras to make the system "just work" out of the box.

Popularity (hits per day): 12 months: 60 (189), 6 months: 71 (157), 3 months: 66 (161), 4 weeks: 53 (208), 1 week: 20 (476)

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Kernel: 4.12.8-200.fc25.x86_64
Desktop: Gnome 3.22.6
Distro: Korora release 25 (Gurgle)

An excellent remix built on top of the already rock solid Fedora! The convenience of having codecs and all sorts of things pre-installed, is just great.

It all comes together with a very professional and well integrated desktop. But best of all it just works, this have been my go to distro for quite a few years now and I see no need to change.

Main uses are:

E-mail(Evolution), Web-surfing(Firefox, Chrome,Vivaldi), Office-Suite (LibreOffice)

bash scripting, golang(VScode), ansible

remote access (Remote Desktop Viewer, Team Viewer,VMware Horizon), VPN (OpenVPN)

Streaming video to Chromecast: Viki, DAZN

Audio Editing: Audacity

Playing Music: Audacious

Virtual Box: Windows 10 VM (hardly used)

I have had the odd hiccup after an update, especially with Wayland, but contacting the community soon provided a solution. Really friendly and uncomplicated assistance is there when you need it.

I did have a problem with one application in Wine that I would always get application not responding message. But the program would launch but just a bit slowly. In the end I switched to another application, and although this also runs under Wine it works perfectly.

A big thanks to the Korora Team.

I have stop distro hopping and quit smoking few days ago.
Why? -- Because Korora, and cigarettes are expensive and both those vices are unhealthy.

Thing is - I like Linux and distros build around it but biggest problem for me is not that I could not do on other distros it was what my old laptop could do. I want it to work without hiccups and I've wanted clean dmesg: no "red letters", drm error free and no hangs during boot.

Here is my spec so you can compare it with your machine and to know is it Korora for you:

Kernel: 4.12.8-200.fc25.x86_64 x86_64 bits: 64 Desktop: KDE Plasma 5.9.5
Distro: Korora release 25 (Gurgle)
Device: laptop FUJITSU SIEMENS ESPRIMO Mobile V5505 v: 20
BIOS: Phoenix v: R01-A0Z date: 01/16/2008
CPU: Dual core Intel Core2 Duo T5850 (-MCP-) cache: 2048 KB
clock speeds: max: 2167 MHz 1: 1000 MHz 2: 1333 MHz
(Also I am using scaling governor to be schedutil on both cores - reduces the risk of overheating)
Graphics:
Card: Intel Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (primary)
Display Server: x11 (X.org 119.3 ) drivers: intel (unloaded: modesetting,fbdev,vesa)

So - if you have old laptop like I do consider this: tweaking it is necessary.
For me Korora is best choice because after checking for errors and fixing it now everything works how I want it.
On other distros I had some colossal problems so nothing - I don't want to break my machine by forcing it to do something that can not be done right, fast or at all.

Are you still a distro hopper just try Korora and if it is for you - enjoy.
Also don't smoke, or vape. Not cool.

Thank you very much Korora Team, good job and I hope to see Korora grow in future.

Korora on laptop:

1) Gesture Support: Has got wayland, supports 4 finger gesture to swipe workspaces, fedora even supports 3 finger gestures not sure why korora doesn't, would have given 10/10 if it did. Anyway, 4 finger gesture is enough for me.

2) Release Model: Rolling release, like arch and opensuse tumbleweed.

3) Stability: Even arch wasn't stable enough, wifi managers kept crashing every 10-15 minutes. Debain based distros unfortunately made the touchpad word real slow, even at full sensitivity. If fedora is an army officer, then korora is special forces officer, much better.

4) Software Installation: Very straight forward installation for .rpm files. Even if it is a source, proper wikis are available to guide you through installation.

5) Software Center: A software center of fedora! not as great as AUR but hell yeah!

Bonus- Installation of korora provides an option to encrypt korora partition, so security isn't an issue. probably fedora has it too. Most of the required softwares come preinstalled too.

Why is this distro not up in the top 10? Korora team! do some marketing, you have made a great distro. :)
