DistroWatch.com: Maui Linux

Maui Linux

Last Update: 2017-08-26 01:22 UTC

Maui Linux is a desktop Linux distribution based on KDE neon and featuring KDE's Plasma desktop. It was created in August 2016 as a continuation of Netrunner's Kubuntu-based "Desktop" edition, but it was re-based on KDE neon which is a more cutting-edge project with frequent updates and a semi-rolling release model. Besides providing a KDE-centric distribution with many popular KDE packages included on the live DVD, the project also focuses on integrating non-KDE software, such as Firefox, Thunderbird or VLC with the underlying infrastructure of the Plasma desktop.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Maui is my new go-to. I loved Netrunner 17, and the switch was a hard one when Netrunner went base-Debian, but Maui has done a good job of keeping the Kubuntu spirit and the KDE experience. A little slow to boot, but responsive and snappy once it's fired up. Yakuake right out of the box in the taskbar is a treat-- since Netrunner got me hooked on it, I won't change anytime soon, and it's great to see Maui continuing to use it.

I'm not hugely happy with synaptic being the only software package manager from a novice-to-linux point of view, but it handles its business with aplomb most of the times, and I have yet run into any issues installing .deb files or appimages for software I've found on the net. It's a lot like Mint-- it just works and does so wonderfully.

Works great out of the box, easy install and if you've never used the yakuake drop down terminal before it will be your new best friend. Been using it as my main OS for about 6 months now and I've run into a few bugs here and there but nothing really worth mentioning. Great job guys, keep up the good work!

When using the Plasma search function (krunner) it is nice that I was offered to install applications if they were not on the system, but this presented an error. To fix, I simply installed Discover (KDE software manager) and it worked fine from then on.

Other than this I am using Maui as my new daily driver!
