Rockstor

Last Update: 2017-08-26 01:22 UTC

Rockstor is a specialist CentOS-based Linux distribution designed for Network Attached Storage (NAS) and private cloud storage solutions. It is based on popular open-source technologies, such as the Btrfs file system and Docker for automating the deployment of applications inside software containers. In addition to standard NAS features like file sharing via NFS, Samba, SFTP and AFP, advanced features such as online volume management, CoW Snapshots, asynchronous replication, compression, and bitrot protection are also supported. Rockstor provides additional applications, including ownCloud, Syncthing, OpenVPN and Plex. These applications (called "Rock-ons") are powered by a Docker-based application hosting framework. The Rockstor user interface, written in JavaScript, makes it simple to manage the server from within a web browser.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Finally a Linux based NAS solution that beats BSD's freeNAS in every aspect.
Well done Rockstor! I love your pricing model as well. Support and Stable Updates can be purchased for a very fair price. If you dont want to spend money its ok too just use the community updates. Love the product!
If rockstor would sell a home NAS box I would buy that right away just to throw some cash your way!

Documentation is very good, but I would have it organized somewhat differently. That's basically what makes this a 9/10 instead of 10/10, for me.

I guess it's like CentOS with the newer Fedora kernel (good approach for a btrfs-based OS, which benefits from newer kernels, and as a heavy Fedora user, I see no problem with the approach).

Simple one-click docker container deployments. Dead simple SAMBA. Once you understand just a few things highlighted nicely in their documentation, you'll find it's remarkably easy and intuitive to navigate. The dashboard is brilliant.

I am *really* enjoying this OS, and I've run FreeNAS, OpenMediaVault, and other popular NAS-type OSes. Not sure a plex deployment could be any simpler and yet so rubust (btrfs).

I don't see myself changing anytime soon. Even bought the Rockstor shirt from their shop today to show some love!
