SME Server

Last Update: 2019-06-20 08:37 UTC

SME Server (known as e-smith at the time) was founded in January 1999 by Joseph and Kim Morrison. The company introduced the first version of its flagship software product, the e-smith server and gateway, in April 1999. By the end of the year, many thousands of e-smith servers were running in countries from Fiji to Finland. Word was spreading quickly among developers and systems integrators who needed a solid, easy-to-use server for their small-business customers. In July 2001, e-smith was acquired by Mitel Networks, but was later released as an open-source product under the GPL licence. In May 2013 a new not-for-profit organisation was set up to manage SME server. Due to copyright issues it was named Koozali SME Server Inc. The word "Koozali" approximates to Swahili for "rebirth". Future versions will use this name. The distribution, which is based on CentOS, is currently entirely funded by donations.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I have been using Koozali since 2001 on many many servers. Currently have 5 servers running. Very easy to use as a SOHO server.
Rock solid, has every feature that I want. Only issues have been with new web software desiring the latest and greatest versions of such things as MySQL, PHP, Python etc. There are now very good Contribs to update these softwares. Version 10 is here and I have a test server running with very few issues so far. The only show stopper for 10 so far is the difficulty setting up raid. It is a good thing that 9.2 is so excellent. I am an old Solaris, RedHat and SCO admin, have tried lots of server OS's, Koozali makes it fun, less pain than all the others.

Super easy to setup and administer. Was using various versions on 30+ customers and have not had any problems. Most are in the 5 to 25 user range but others have 100+ users. All my custom templates have been compatible (up to now) with the new version. The only reason I'm upgrading is because of Dkim and the tsl update. Actually I could do both on the other versions but it's much easier to upgrade (except for the time it takes to move terabytes of data) to the new server because an in place upgrade is not possible from older versions to 9.2. Other servers are good but the SME distro has the needs covered out of the box and installation is about 20 minutes
